On Sunday 4 December 2011 a special ceremony was held to mark the 200th anniversary of the sinking in Lough Swilly of the HMS Saldanha. It was the first ever commemorative event recalling what is one of Ireland’s worst ever marine disasters. Until then there had been no permanent memorial to their deaths.
